More Than Meets the Eye: Supercars With the Most Boot Space

Beloved for their sleek lines, powerful engines, opulent interiors, and… ample boot space?

While storage space may not be the top criteria considered when it comes to buying a supercar, having enough room for your bags and accessories will determine how much use the car will actually get. Will it be your bona-fide long weekend weapon, or will it sit in your garage, mostly unused, barring the odd sunny Sunday afternoon?

If you’re seeking the supercar with the roomiest boot, look no further than the McLaren GT. It’s a unique hybrid of the grand tourer and supercar concepts, and it really works. Like most supercars, it packs knockout performance and two seats, but the GT sports a unique trick: a huge 570 litres of storage.

That’s significantly more space than you’ll get from the classic family hatch, the VW Golf. Though of course, you can’t fold down the McLaren’s seats like you can in a Golf. First world problems, anyone?

So how do other supercars measure up in terms of boot space? Let’s find out.

Supercars with surprisingly decent boot space

Modern supercar owners are increasingly seeking greater practicality, like the ability to carry cases, golf clubs, shopping bags and even skis. This is partly why Ferrari and Lamborghini have developed larger vehicles that blur the lines between supercar and SUV, in an effort to offer greater usability. But the fact is that these crossover vehicles are not ‘supercars’ in the traditional sense. So we won’t discuss them in this article.

If you’re looking for the ultimate long-range supercar, one of the most spacious is Ferrari’s now-discontinued GTC4Lusso, which in addition to having four seats, packs a whopping 800 litres of trunk when the seats are down – if you can find one, this beast will swallow skis, golf clubs, and guitars with aplomb.

At a glance, here are some of the most practical supercars and their boot storage.

12 supercars with usable boot space

Audi R8

Audi’s R8 is a thing of beauty and we love it for its smooth driving experience, but this lithe two-seater packs just 112 litres of boot space, making it the one of the least spacious on our list. The deep boot in the front of the car will hold two small overnight bags, so it can handle a weekend away without much fuss – just don’t expect to take your golf clubs.

Porsche 911

It’s no surprise we find Porsche’s iconic 911 on this list seeing as it is ‘the’ practical supercar, though perhaps surprisingly it provides just 132 litres of (front) boot to play with. A 911 will take two weekend bags, and if you yearn for more choices for your footwear, you can also squeeze in a couple of extra pairs of Bally loafers or Louboutin heels on the small rear seats.

Ferrari F8

Like most mid-engined supercars, Ferrari’s incredible F8 has a whopping V8 engine where the rear boot would traditionally be, so it instead gives you a mini boot in the nose of the car. Compared to the Lamborghinis on this list, the F8’s ‘frunk’ offers a generous 200-litre capacity. It may still be a long way from golf club storage, but hey, who’s thinking about golf when you can go from 0-60 mph in 2.3 seconds?

Ferrari 296

Ferrari is a brand that loves a rivalry – check out our article on Ferrari vs Lamborghini to learn more. And with the 296, some say Ferrari created an adversary for its very own F8. In terms of boot space, the 296 trails the slightly less performance-oriented Portofino, but it does pip the F8 by a single extra litre (201 litres in the front boot), which means if you turn up to a country retreat in your 296, you can bring one more bottle of Penfolds Grange than an F8 owner. Small victories!

Ferrari 488

The Ferrari 488 has both of its aforementioned stablemates covered for practicality, with a very usable 230 litres of trunk space in the nose. In fact, this isn’t too far off a city car like the humble Ford Fiesta with its 290 litres, though the awkward shape of the 488’s boot is less usable. You could pack a couple of weekender cases, but probably not a full-sized suitcase. Interestingly, while Ferrari’s iconic red remains a popular and striking choice for cars, according to statistics from Eminent, red is one of the less commonly chosen colours for travel bags. Black remains the most popular colour, accounting for around 40% of all purchases – and of course, it contrasts beautifully with Ferrari red.

Lamborghini Huracán

The words ‘Lamborghini’ and ‘practicality’ are rarely found in the same sentence, and for good reason. Although, with 150 litres of boot space under the bonnet, the feisty Huracán is in the middle of the pack when compared to others on this list. While the Huracán offers considerably less space than Ferrari’s 488, it’s much more than you’ll find in its big brother …

Lamborghini Aventador

With its striking design and monstrous 6.5-litre V-12, the Aventador is an unforgettable machine. So does the boot space match its power? Not in the slightest. In fact, at 110 litres, it has the smallest capacity on this list. Still, you will be able to fit in a pliable overnight bag or two, but you’ll need to pack strategically.

Bentley Continental GT

The Continental GT is the master of the long drive. It’s the height of luxury and packs a powerful punch, plus a spacious boot makes it one of the most practical long-distance cars on this list. The big GT boasts 358 litres of trunk in the rear, which more than triples some others on this list. Outdoor sports enthusiasts, look no further – your Continental GT will take a full set of golf clubs and a pair of skis, with a wide aperture for increased accessibility.

Aston Martin DB11

It’s no secret that James Bond adores the DB11, and we suspect that’s not only because it combines speed and style, but also space to store his gadgets. This legendary supercar has a respectable 270-litre boot in the rear with a sensible shape that makes for easy suitcase storage – ideal for thrilling European adventures, especially when you need to pack a few bottles of vodka and Martini, for reputation’s sake.

McLaren 720S

The successor to the McLaren 650S has 210 litres of boot space behind its seats, capable of taking two standard carry-on bags. That’s fine for a quick weekend jaunt, but should you want to extend your escape, the 720S also has a further 150 litres of space in the nose of the car – perfect for another bag and perhaps a magnum of Bollinger.

Jaguar F-Type

There are many F-Type variants, although the coupe makes this list due to its comparatively cavernous 407 litres of space in the boot. Being front-engined also means an F-Type’s boot is conveniently located at the rear, though it is a bit of an awkward shape – long and shallow. Fortunately for all golf enthusiasts, this plays into your hands, as two golf bags should fit snugly.

Mercedes-Benz AMG GT

The AMG GT is another grand tourer that packs legitimate supercar performance. It offers a surprisingly large boot at 350 litres, which is enough for golf clubs. The only caveat – like the F-Type – is that this space is long and shallow, so it’s better suited to soft bags rather than hard suitcases.
